Connectors for energy storage

IZAR makes flexible connectors, laminated busbars and aluminium connectors that carry direct current between modules, racks and cabinets in energy storage systems.

Energy storage: racks of battery modules in a container

Where it works

Between modules and racks

Connectors link the modules in a rack, the racks to each other and the path to the DC cabinet. Poles sit close together and there are many joints.

What it has to withstand

  • Direct current

IZAR tables list DC ratings, so the cross-section can be read off directly.

  • Thermal movement

Modules warm up while charging and discharging. The connector takes up the movement and assembly tolerances.

  • Insulation

Poles are close together. An epoxy coating allows a more compact layout.

Enquiry

What to include in your enquiry

  1. DC current [A] or cross-section [mm²]
  2. Pole spacing and height difference
  3. Path material: copper or aluminium
  4. Contact: nickel, tin or silver
  5. Insulation: epoxy or heat-shrink
  6. Quantity and batch size

Questions

Choosing the right connector

Which IZAR connectors suit energy storage systems?

PE press-welded copper connectors, SL laminated busbars and PAL aluminium connectors. PE takes up movement between modules, epoxy-insulated SL allows a compact current path and PAL suits aluminium paths.

Do the IZAR current rating tables refer to direct current?

Yes. All tables give DC ratings for vertical mounting indoors, without forced air flow, at air temperatures up to 40 °C. The PG, PE and SM tables assume a connector operating at 90 °C, the PAL table 70 °C and 57% IACS, and the SE table gives the current at a temperature rise ΔT of 30, 50 and 70 °C. The PG and PE tables also have an AC column.

How does epoxy insulation differ from heat-shrink?

The epoxy coating of SL busbars is hard and sealed, resisting corrosion, abrasion and impact. According to the catalogue, it is generally safer than heat-shrink insulation and gives better thermal and electrical performance.
